masks

am i all you’ve dreamed of
can i be your lover
tell me who i should be
and i will do the rest

take my hand in yours
believe all my promises
give your self to me
and i will suck you dry

those of us who prey
on innocence, naivety
have perforce to learn
the art of camouflage

eyes can be deceived
by pretty looks and flattery
hearts can be deceived
by those who live to lie

    • It wasn’t until I wrote the third line that I realised it wasn’t a standard love poem. And having read it a few times, I’m not yet sure if the speaker is merely unpleasant or thoroughly despicable.

Oh, thoroughly despicable with a touch of reprehensible and dastardly mixed in!

    • One of those niggling regrets one picks up during a lifetime, I have never found occasion to use the line “You Sir are a cad and a bounder” whilst looking aghast, or down my nose, or both. 😆
