half and half

by damommza & sunovawot

some say the glass is half full
some say it’s half empty
I say there are good reasons
whichever half is me

if my life is half full then
there’s always room for more
I’m sitting around on ideas
with plenty more in store

there’s time I haven’t used yet
so many things not done
I haven’t planned my future
too busy having fun

I sit back on my laurels
and waste what’s given me
after all, I’m half full and
I’m still so young and free

it’s like I have some savings
a cushion to abuse
because I am still half full
I can afford to lose

the nature of the beast is
to grab what it can get
so I will keep on grabbing
I’m only half full yet

and if I sleep for too long
then party ’til I drop
I’ve time still to get cracking
fill my glass to the top

I’m ready to get working
I really know my stuff
I’ve got plans here somewhere but
tomorrow’s soon enough

and yet I’m still half empty
sometimes that gives me pain
I’ll have to fill up someday
or slowly go insane

  2. when damommza first passed me the poem it reminded me of a song so I wrote another verse, not part of the poem but to amuse myself, it has two alternative last lines:

I know one must be wary
    remember Pink Floyd sung
ten years have got behind you
you weren’t told when to run
    or
    you missed the starting gun

damommza preferred the second choice last line, I am not sure 😆

I like the starting gun comment because 1) it tells you when to run and 2) the phrase makes me think of *BANG* which makes me think of *FLASH* and how ten years have passed in a flash and you are still waiting to be told to GOGOGO. :rolls: 😳 😆

      • My problem, and the reason I’m not sure, is that the lines work so well together in the original song that I find it difficult to choose either as a stand alone, but I couldn’t see a method of getting them both into my verse in a way that would make sense. 😀

I should say for those (if any) that don’t recognise the lyric the song is “Time” from Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”

          Time

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day
You fritter and waste the hours in an offhand way.
Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town
Waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine staying home to watch the rain.
You are young and life is long and there is time to kill today.
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.

So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it’s sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you’re older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines
Hanging on in quiet desperation is the English way
The time is gone, the song is over,
Thought I’d something more to say.

Very apt poem! being half full with room for more and just wiating to grab it, and half empty… with the sadness that comes along with it. 🙂
and of course you have touched the heart of this devoted floydian… 8)

Thank you Villow! I think sunovawot really hit the nail on the head with this one. There is good and bad with both so no matter how you see the cup, it could be a good thing! 🙂 😀

    • Thank you, as usual damommza set the subject and the tone, I just followed her lead 😀 As for Floyd, I’m just wondering how many more formats they’re going to be able to sell me 😆
