the winner’s game

by damommza

On this bright December morning
I awoke and free of pain
and decided one more time to
visit my own youth again
throw away the bottles filled with
potions to slow down the fall
instead of running from my death
I will now embrace it all
damn the cold and damn the darkness
to the world I bare my chest
now’s the time to even the score
now’s the time to beat the rest
climb the mountains that were looming
fight the demons on their ground
realize that I can win this
even on my last “go round”
I am now whole and unbroken
I have won my loser’s game
years from now when they will call me
they will call the devil’s name

I could not have written this without sunovawot’s “The Loser’s Game”, which immediately led me to this response! 😀

  2. a grand reply from the “shepherdess to the shepherd” as we say here. 🙂

  3. My poem is about accepting, albeit unhappily, the cards as they are dealt, and this, damommza’s, is about kicking over the card table and refusing to play. An interesting contrast 😀
