the bells

the bells were sounding out again
though none could say what for
whether we had attained peace
or we were damned to war
and all around me I saw faces
filled with black despair
I would have turned my back on them
but found I did not dare
so I closed my tear-filled eyes
to try to block the sight
the only thing it did for me
was filter out some light
still politicians played their games
and never had their fill
why would they when they took the prize
but we would foot the bill

Excellent composition. These lines are just perfect and give a great visual. Love it.

“so I closed my tear-filled eyes
to try to block the sight
the only thing it did for me
    was filter out some light”

    • Thank you, I think it’s missing a linking section between the lines you quoted and the last four, it’s too much of a jump as it stands. 😀

Akshully, I like the way it is now because of one word..”still”. That one word tells the story of countless struggles, rallying cries, debates, voting and public outcry, yet “still” …nothing has changed. That’s how this chick reads it! 😀
