Caroline

Caroline was laughing as I looked toward the future
lord she was distacting as I strove to navigate
curse and sing damnation on the bullies and the blackguards
all they want is everything before it is too late

Caroline demanded that I should ignore them
lord but she was pretty when the anger lit her eyes
sadly I concurred and packed up all my marbles
that she’d give me orders came as no surprise

Caroline sang out, stories of the old days
lord but she was hung up on the glories of the past
I was holding out for days of wine and roses
but death and desperation dogged us to the last

Caroline reached out, touched me on the shoulder
lord she said don’t give up, we’ve come too far to quit
what else could I do, I smiled and kissed her fingers
this world, I said, is perfect with you my love in it

Very sweet ending to the poem. I wondered, at first, if the speaker was a child playing with marbles with the girl that he had a crush on who he would protect from bullies but by the “stories of the old days..” I knew they were both adults.. πŸ˜€

So, now that I have read this for the 2 or 8th time, I have an even greater appreciation of it. My interpretation of the poem is that they start out as children and he adores her. He wants to protect her and as the time passes, they stay together through the good and the bad and even though life has not been kind to them, as long as she is by his side, his world is always perfect.

      • Actually you are reading far more depth into this than I think I put πŸ˜€
Had I spent just a little bit more time writing my reply to your first comment I would have been able to claim your reading of it as all my own work πŸ˜†

    • Thank you πŸ˜€ I was using marbles in the idiomatic sense of picking up your marbles and leaving, so by packing up my marbles I was following her order to have nothing to do with the “bullies and blackguards”. Always biddable, me! πŸ˜€

LOLZ! I see a story in there that lasts about 60 years from a childhood love to old age and always together..she’ll always boss him around and he will always follow her and his world will always be “right” as long as she is in it.. I can actually see them from the first to the last..excellent poem..glad I could explain it! LOL!!

    • Thank you πŸ˜€ but as I said above, damommza reads more into this than I was aware of writing. To be honest I didn’t even know it was a love poem until I wrote the last verse πŸ˜†
