none when they came

an elegant posture, a nod or a grin
none could i see as they straggled on in
for sure and forgive me, but to my shame
i gave not a fig for none when they came

no light in the darkness, no measure of hope
for all who depend on a rack or a rope
playing for time was the name of my game
for i had not an answer for none when they came

each to his own, let the subtleties soar
and dance to the rhythm of unwritten score
eyes that are drawn to the flickering flame
still i had nothing for none when they came

cries i ignored, and continued to spurn
those who were harried and fated to burn
my choices were made and i still hold the blame
for giving no succour to none when they came

    • This one started with the title which just popped into my head, and intrigued me enough that I wanted to know more, hence the poem.
To me the narrator is someone who knows he could, and should, help the victims he sees around him, but, for whatever reason, he does nothing. That he feels guilt for his inaction in no way mitigates his lack of charity.

abikertoo has an interesting point there. I saw it as the main character was the executioner..and as the flow of humanity passes before him, he has no compassion, no empathy or sympathy..he’s playing for time..waiting until this job is over as he hopes to avoid ever becoming one of them…very thought provoking..

    • Now that is an interesting view. I took him as an observer only, but you see him as an actor in the drama. My only quibble with your interpretation would be where does the “shame” and “blame” he feels come from. One possibility could, I suppose, be that they were not real emotions but vague echoes perhaps, of what he thought he should be feeling.

I do see him as an active participant and the blame is that fact that he made the choice to do what he’s doing with shame being that he is more cowardly than those who pass before him, but he just doesn’t care..he’s biding his time and even the shame isn’t enough to change how he feels… I really liked this BTW..alot to think about..
